[origin: EP0147612A2] The apparatus has a device (17, 18) controlled by a microcomputer (10) which acts on the internal combustion engine so as to change the speed. Together with the internal combustion engine and the device (17, 18), the microcomputer (10) forms a control loop and, depending on the actual value speed signals, calculates in a first program section a speed value by summing the applied actual value signals. This value is then compared with a stored set point speed value and, depending on the deviation, a numerical value which directly determines the width of the subsequent control signals is extracted from a read-only memory (12) containing the control characteristic lines. <IMAGE>
