The sensors are greatly stressed at their place of use and involve considerable cost as a result of the elaborate measuring technology. The invention solves these problems in that the control according to characteristics of the operational parameters is effected as a function of the desired operating mode, individual operational parameters for calculating the manipulated variable being measured outside the pumping medium. The speed n and the capacity P are advantageously used as electrical measured variables for describing the characteristics. The characteristics or performance data determined are permanently programmed into a computer.
