[origin: WO8500605A1] Process for selective reduction of nitrile-functional groups on complex molecules without otherwise alteration of the complex molecule. In brief, the process of this invention involves the use of a reagent comprising cobalt chloride and a stoichiometric excess of an alkali metal borohydride. This reagent enables the selective reduction of a nitrile-functional group of a complex molecule without otherwise alteration of the molecule. The ability to selectively reduce the nitrile-functional group to the corresponding amine can be used to advantage in the cross-coupling of haptens to a variety of labels, such as enzymes and fluorophores. These labelled haptens are useful in immunoassay of biological samples.
