A method for cutting brick blanks from a clay strand (2), in which method a clay strand piece (4) cut off from a clay strand (2) is conveyed by transport devices (5, 6, 7) to a belt table (8) whose belts are slightly spaced from each other, the clay strand piece (4) is cut on the belt table (8) into single brick blanks, and the brick blanks are then supplied to a settling means by further transport devices (14), characterized in that the belt table (8) with the clay strand piece (4) lying thereupon is elevated, whereby the clay strand piece (4) is led across stationary cutting wires (10) which pass through the gaps between the belts, that after this cutting operation the belts of the belt table (8) in the elevated position are more spaced from each other and that the brick blanks being in the elevated position and now farther spaced from each other are further conveyed to the settling means that the cutting wires (10) are cleaned while the belt table (8) is still in the elevated position.
