Pickling process for aluminium in an alkali lye bath with simultaneous precipitation of aluminium hydroxide in situ and regeneration of the alkali lye consumed during pickling, wherein a pickling bath is used which contains less than 10 g/l caustic soda or caustic potash solution and also contains sodium gluconate as the complexing agent, and is free of sulphides, sulphates, phosphates and thiosulphates, and wherein the aluminium hydroxide occurring in the pickling bath is precipitated without alteration of the temperature of the pickling bath.
