Adapter (1) for gas discharge lamps (4) or low voltage lamps, comprising a housing (5) with a socket (6) for connection to a mains voltage holder (7) and a holder for the gas discharge lamp (4) or low voltage lamp, in which a fluorescent lamp ballast, choke, transformer or transducer with coil(s) (2) and a magnetic circuit (3) are arranged in the housing surrounding the holder for the gas discharge lamp (4) or low voltage lamp, characterised in that the coils are wound as toroidal coils (2) around the longitudinal axis (L) of the adapter (1), that the magnetic circuit (3) is formed to enclose the toroidal coils (2) on all sides and in interlocking manner on the outer sides of the coils, and that the magnetic circuit (3) is formed of sheet metal laminations (9) stacked on top of each other in the direction of the coil winding (2), the sheet metal laminations being of involuted shape and disposed side by side in interlocking manner forming a closed ring.
