Respiratory protection device as an escape apparatus with reciprocating respiration, comprising a chemical cartridge (1) generating oxygen, a respirator bag (5) connected to the chemical cartridge (1), the chemical cartridge being secured with its inlet opening (D) on the top end face of the respirator bag and a respirator hose (3) with a mouthpiece (4), as well as an ever-ready holder (7) receiving these parts, characterised in that a) the chemical cartridge (1) is arranged inside the respirator bag (5) and is wholly ensheathed thereby, in such a way that the outer surface (A) of the chemical cartridge is surrounded on all sides by a free space within the respirator bag when the apparatus is in operation, and b) the chemical cartridge (1) is closely enwrapped by a thermally insulating covering (2) and that the covering (2) forms a unit with the respirator hose (3).
