A lifting device of the jack type (1) which is intended in particular for lifting a motor vehicle, comprising a parallelogram assembly essentially formed by a lifting head which is fixed with respect to two upper arms (2, 3) and two lower arms (4, 5) resting on a base (24) and actuated by an actuating device which is inclined with respect to a base plate (25) of the base, said lower arms pivoting respectively about lower spindles (12, 13) mounted in the base, the distance of one of the lower spindles (12) with respect to the base plate being smaller than that of the other spindle (13) so that the axis B of the parallelogram is inclined with respect to the vertical at the side of the lower spindle which is disposed closest to the base plate, characterised in that the lifting head (19) with its support face (20) is displaced by a value (A) with respect to the axis (B) of the parallelogram on the side opposite to that comprising the lower spindle which is disposed closest to the base plate in order to prevent a tilting moment of the jack when said jack (1) is in the operative lifting position.
