Panel-shaped wall element for buildings to be erected according to the modular building block principle utilising at least one right-angled steel border (2, 3) carrying a wall panel (1), wherein the wall panel (1), formed in the form of a sandwich, is reinforced on its vertical longitudinal sides (22) with wooden planks (14) and has a core layer (6) of a heat-insulating material carrying on its two faces a respective covering layer (7, 8), the covering layers overlapping the planks and serving to form the edging of a circumferentially surrounding frame, and connecting means (4, 5) are provided for connecting the frame and the wall panel, characterised in that the core layer (6) consists of a hard foamed plastics material, the covering layers (7 and 8) are made of sheet steel, the covering layers (7, 8) are bonded to the core layer (6) in a shear-resistant manner, the border consists of two equally-sized, flexurally rigid frames (2 and 3) of U-section steel which are arranged with their backs (16) turned towards each other and which bear with the backs (16) against the wall panel (1), and threaded bolts (4) carrying nuts (20) serve as connecting means.
