Positioning device for cylinders without piston rods, which have a piston (3) guided in a cylinder body (1) in an axially movable manner and which can be acted on by a pressure medium on one or both sides, and an output slide (11) coupled to the piston (3) by means of coupling elements (5, 9) and if necessary guided along the cylinder body (1), characterized in that between the cylinder body (1) and the outlet slide (11) there is arranged a measuring instrument which emits measuring signals upon relative movement between the two, which measuring instrument has a measuring strip (13, 14 ; 24) fixed to the cylinder body (1), extending over the entire stroke path of the output slide, and carrying analog or digital longitudinal markings, which strip can be scanned by a sensor (15 ; 25) fixed to the output slide (11) and directly opposite the measuring strip (13, 14 ; 24) the sensor emitting sensor signals corresponding to the longitudinal markings moving relatively to it (Fig. 1, 3).
