A device for applying a viscous or pasty material, in particular a hot melt adhesive, on the edge of a flat object, in particular a sheet metal shaped part, having a storage container for the material to be applied, an application head, a conveying means for conveying the material from the storage container into the application head, and two application jaws (3, 4), between which the edge of the object can be inserted during application, and which each have at least one application channel (11, 12) connected with the storage container and opening out into jaw surfaces which are facing each other, wherein the application jaws (3, 4) are arranged in the application head pressing resiliently against each other in the manner of pincers.
