Process for manufacturing ingots and castings, a melt of a relatively high-melting alloy, in particular an iron-, nickel- or cobalt-based alloy, being cast by top or bottom casting in a stationary multi-part ingot mould (2) with a base plate (1), and whereupon the casting is released from the mould at the place of casting, characterized in that the casting, in the solidifying state, is released from the mould in at least two steps, in a first step, the outer skin already being solidified and the core being liquid in the lower region, this region, in particular the base of the casting, being released from the mould over its entire periphery, and a remaining part, at least the head part of the casting, remaining further in one part (8) of the ingot mould (2) until it has completely solidifed, after which the head part of the casting is released from the mould in a last step.
