[origin: EP0185789A1] A charged-particle analyser, having two electrodes (8, 9) used for generating an axially-symmetrical electric field is proposed, which electrodes extend, together with the paths of the particles to be analysed, along a nominal circle (10) located between the electrodes; in order to achieve improved dispersion, the electrodes (8, 9) are shaped such that the axially-symmetrical field generated by them has equipotential surfaces, which have an at least approximately elliptical section in a section at right angles to the plane of the nominal circle (10). <IMAGE>
