Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0189134A2] New and improved activated carbon fiber yarns and fabrics are disclosed. It has been discovered that if precursor yarns are intertwined to form a multi-fold yarn prior to being subjected to an activation process, activated carbon yarns having improved tenacity and excellent sorbitivity to toxic gases are provided. The new and improved yarns can be woven into fabric with reduced breakage and/or weak points on conventional weaving equipment. In preferred embodiments the new and improved multi-fold yarns are surface-treated with a polymeric fluorocarbon resin to improve abrasion resistance and reduce fly. In alternate embodiments, improved activated carbon containing fabrics are disclosed which provide protection to the wearer from toxic vapors and gases.
