1. A machine (1) for pressing and tying up bales, particularly bales of waste paper, with wire, consisting of a pressing box or pressing channel, a pressure ram (25) movable into this with an alternating motion and a binding device for laying one or more wire hoops round a finish-pressed bale held by the pressure ram (25), each of which hoops is closed by a wire region (29) taken through the pressure ram (25) behind the bale, for which purpose the pressure ram (25) has channels (27) which extend transversely to the pressing direction and are dimensioned so that a lead-through tool can be passed through them and out of which the wire region (10, 29) passes through opening gaps (28) to bear against the bale (material 6), the opening gaps (28) each ending between two gap edges bounding adjacent pressure-plate strips (30 to 34), one of which gap edges (40) projects at least partially beyond the opening gap (28), characterised in that the projecting gap edges (40) cover the whole opening gap (28) and are arranged in pairs on a common pressure-plate strip (31, 33) for two adjacent opening gaps, which strip lies in a first plane situated to the fore in the pressing direction, and in that the other gap edges (gap wall 37/gap wall 38) are likewise arranged in pairs on a common pressure-plate strip (30, 32, 34) which lies in a second plane situated to the rear in the pressing direction, the pressure-plate strips (31, 33/30, 32, 34) succeeding one another alternately.

Bei einer Maschine zum Pressen und Umschnüren von Ballen, insbesondere Altpapierballen, mit Draht sind die durch den Preßstempel (2) verlaufenden und in seitlichen Spalten offen ausmündenden Kanäle (9) für das Hindurchschieben von Durchführwerkzeugen und das Hindurchbewegen von Drahtschleifen (10) verschmutzungsanfällig, wobei sich insbesondere Papier u. dgl. in den Spalten verkeilen und die Verschnürungseinrichtung außer Betrieb setzen kann. Zur Abhilfe sind sowohl bei Horizontalverschnürungen wie auch bei Vertikalverschnürungen quer zum Spalt (13) vorspringende Spaltkanten (18) vorgesehen, die eine Abdeckung liefern und den Eintritt von Preßgut in den Spalt (13) vermeiden. Auch die gegenüberstehende Kante ist als rechtwinklige oder scharfe Kante (21) ausgebildet, um Preßgut abzufangen. Bei Vertikalverschnürungen sind weiterhin bewegliche Verschlußstücke (48) für die oberen Kanalausmündungen vorgesehen, so daß loses Gut beim Pressenbetrieb nicht von oben in die Kanäle (42) einfallen kann.
