To assure a spatially predetermined field pattern in the useful volume with only small field errors, outside and on opposite sides of the useful volume at least one thin plate-shaped body of predetermined geometric extent comprising a material having high permeability is provided, of which the surfaces facing the useful volume are shaped and arranged so that the surfaces lie on a magnetic equipotential surface of the magnetic field to be generated in the useful volume.
