Device for fastening railway rails on steel sleepers, comprising a supporting plate with bearing edges for the lateral guidance of the base of a rail, and comprising sleeper screws and tensioning clamps for tightening the base of the rail against the sleeper, characterised in that - means for the lateral guidance of the supporting plate (9) have bearing members (17, 18) which are secured to the steel sleeper (4) and are provided with inclined bearing edges (19, 20) which extend substantially parallel to the bearing edges (12, 13) of the supporting plate (9) for supporting the rail base (14) ; - the bearing edges (19, 20) are spaced from the neighbouring terminal edges (21, 22) of the supporting plate (9) ; - each of the gaps, thus formed, accommodates a respective spacer member (23, 24) having a bearing edge (25, 26), which is also inclined ; - each of the neighbouring bearing edges (25, 19 or 26, 20) extends downwardly in an inclined manner and towards the supporting plate (9) ; and - the spacer members (23, 24) can be secured in position by means of the screws (29, 30) and by means of members (45, 46) of the tensioning clamps (41, 42), the members (45, 46) of the tensioning clamps remote from the rail being urged onto the spacer members.
