[origin: US4673481A] A reduction pot for the production of aluminum by fused salt electrolysis comprises an outer steel shell, thermal insulation and an inner lining essentially of carbon with iron cathode bars embedded in it. The floor insulation comprises at least in part of a mechanically compacted layer of a granular material of ground insulation layers and having essentially a particle size that varies between 0.01 and 8 mm. The sidewalls of the reduction pot contain, up to at most 70% of the height (h) of the cathode bar elements, mechanically compacted granular material from ground insulation layers. Above that the thermally and electrically insulated steel shell is lined with sidewall bricks, and the gap between the sidewall bricks and the floor elements is closed off with the usual ramming mass.

Eine Elektrolysewanne für die Herstellung von Aluminium durch Schmelzflusselektrolyse besteht aus einer äusseren Stahlwanne (12), einer wärmedämmenden Isolation und einer im wesentlichen aus Kohlenstoff bestehenden Innenauskleidung mit eisernen Kathodenbarren (32). Die Bodenisolation besteht mindestens teilweise aus einer mit mechanischen Mitteln verfestigten Schicht aus einem Granulat (14) aus gemahlenen Isolationsschichten mit einer im wesentlichen zwischen 0,01 und 8 mm variierenden Korngrösse. Die Seitenwände der Elektrolysewanne (10) enthalten bis höchstens 70% der Höhe (h) der Kathodenbarrenelemente (20) mechanisch verdichtetes Granulat (14) aus gemahlenen Isolationsschichten. Darüber ist die thermisch und elektrisch isolierte Stahlwanne (12) mit Randsteinen (24) ausgekleidet, und die Fuge (26) zwischen Randsteinen (24) und Bodenkohlenelementen (20) ist mit üblicher Stampfmasse verschlossen.
