[origin: EP0193814A2] The information carrier is manufactured using a matrix body (M) which initially has all the character elements (2) of possible characters or into which character elements can be inserted. To produce a particular character, some character elements (2) are removed by breaking out. The matrix body (M) is then encapsulated in an encapsulating compound in such a way that only the remaining character elements (2) forming a character are visible. An information carrier produced in this way is proof against forgery and wear resistant. It is therefore particularly suitable for repeatedly reused packaging containers such as, for example, beer barrels. <IMAGE>
