A printer having at least one printing system which comprises an exchangeable printing head (18; 32), an exchangeable printing abutment (38; 44; 70; 106), exchangeable conveying and guide means (36, 56; 50, 46, 48; 76, 68, 110, 56) for a print support (24, 26, 30) moving through the printing system, and possibly other exchangeable function elements which co-operate with the printing head, characterised in that at least the printing abutment (38; 44; 70; 106) and the conveying and guide means (36, 56; 50, 46, 48; 76, 68, 71; 110, 56) of each printing system are combined to form an exchangeable unit.
