[origin: WO8602290A1] Protective coatings are applied to substrate metals by coating the metal surface, e.g. by dipping the substrate metal (10) in a molten alloy of the coating metals, and then exposing the coating at an elevated temperature to an atmosphere containing a reactive gaseous species which forms an oxide, a nitride, a carbide, a boride or a silicide (13). The coating material is a mixture of the metals M1? and M2? of which M1? forms a stable oxide, nitride, carbide, boride or silicide (13) under the prevailing conditions and of which M2? (12) does not form a stable oxide, nitride, carbide, a boride or silicide. M2? (12) serves to bond the oxide, etc. of M1? (13) to the substrate metal (10). Mixtures of M1? and/or M2? metals may be employed. This method is much easier to carry out than prior methods.

Des revêtements de protection sont appliqués sur des substrats métalliques en enduisant la surface du métal, par ex. en plongeant le substrat métallique (10) dans un bain de fusion composé d'un alliage des métaux de revêtement, et en exposant ensuite le revêtement à une température élevée dans une atmosphère contenant une espèce gazeuse réactive formant un nitrure, un carbure, un borure ou un siliciure (13). Le matériau de revêtement est un mélange de métaux M1 et M2, où M1 forme un nitrure, carbure, borure ou siliciure stables (13) dans les conditions environnantes, et M2 (12) ne forme pas de nitrure, carbure, borure ou siliciure stables, mais sert à lier le nitrure, etc. de M1 (13) sur le substrat métallique (10). On peut utiliser des mélanges de métaux M1 et/ou M2. Ce procédé s'applique beaucoup plus aisément que les procédés de l'art antérieur.
