In order to be able to use cold steel material or steel material at higher temperature alternatively, the transport device (5, 6) can be charged on the one hand from the preheating furnace (1) and on the other hand from outside, the preheating furnace (1) is equipped with a number of high-speed burners (7) and the flue gas line (23) opens into a region of the outlet openings of the high-speed burners (7) which surrounds the flame jet (22) of the high-speed burners (7), it being possible to suck hot flue gas out of the heating furnace (2) by the suction effect of the high-speed burners (7). <IMAGE>
