Apparatus for pleating and pressing-smoothing a bottle capping element comprising a pair of pleating pads (2) mounted in facing relationship in a rigid casing (1), a pair of pressing-smoothing pads (3) mounted orthogonally with respect to the pleating pads (2) and adjacent thereto, and means (5) for selectively displacing the pleating pads (2) and the pressing-smoothing pads (3) respectively towards each other, the pleating pads (2) and the pressing-smoothing pads (3) being associated with resilient lateral diaphragms (6 ; 7), characterized in that it comprises rigid abutment surfaces (14 ; 15) carried by at least one divider element (9), said abutment surfaces being disposed facing the resilient lateral diaphragms (6, 7), being spaced from the resilient lateral diaphragms for a rest position of the pads (2, 3), and against which the respective lateral diaphragms come to bear upon extension of the corresponding pad.
