The apparatus has a fuel supply (24) and possibly an air or oxygen supply (54) to a point of combustion comprising a grate (22), preferably a bar grate. For the purposes of improved and controllable combustion or thermal decomposition, material-dispersion means (plates 70) engage in the grate gaps, a relative movement between these and the grate (22) being brought about. The grate bars (56) are mounted free from stresses or with play both in the direction of their longitudinal extension and transversely thereto. The fuel supply comprises an upright feed or fall shaft (14) which can be closed by means of a stopper (16), which can be operated from outside, preventing a "flashback" in the fuel supply. <IMAGE>

Vorrichtung zur Verbrennung und/oder thermischen Zersetzung von Brennmaterial, insbesondere festen Brennstoffen, mit einer Brennstoff- (24) sowie gegebenenfalls Luft- bzw. Sauerstoffzufuhr (54) zu einem Rost (22), vorzugsweise Stabrost, umfassenden Verbrennungsort. Zum Zwecke einer verbesserten und steuerbaren Verbrennung bzw. thermischen Zersetzung greifen in die Rostspalte Material-Auflockerungsmittel (Scheiben 70) ein, wobei zwischen diesen und dem Rost (22) eine Relativbewegung herbeigeführt wird. Die Roststäbe (56) sind sowohl in Richtung ihrer Längserstreckung als auch quer dazu spannungsfrei bzw. mit Spiel gelagert. Die Brennstoffzufuhr umfaßt einen aufrechten Förder- bzw. Fallschacht (14), der durch einen von außen her betätigbaren Pfropfen (16) unter Verhinderung eines "Rückbrandes" in der Brennstoffzufuhr verschließbar ist.
