[origin: EP0202681A2] The apparatus has a fuel supply (24) and possibly an air or oxygen supply (54) to a point of combustion comprising a grate (22), preferably a bar grate. For the purposes of improved and controllable combustion or thermal decomposition, material-dispersion means (plates 70) engage in the grate gaps, a relative movement between these and the grate (22) being brought about. The grate bars (56) are mounted free from stresses or with play both in the direction of their longitudinal extension and transversely thereto. The fuel supply comprises an upright feed or fall shaft (14) which can be closed by means of a stopper (16), which can be operated from outside, preventing a "flashback" in the fuel supply. <IMAGE>
