A stay for window sashes, door panels or the like, the stay comprising : a mounting plate (8) adapted to be secured to the frame in the rebate : a retaining plate (9) securable to the sash or panel or the like in the rebate : and two arms (6, 7) of different lengths each connected by way of a swivel joint (3', 3'', 4', 4'') to the mounting plate (8) and retaining plate (9) and forming therewith a link trapezium whose shortest member is the retaining plate (9) on the sash or panel or the like, characterised in that two (3'' and 4') of the four swivel joints (3', 3'' and 4', 4'') are adapted to be uncoupled (10, 11 and 20, 21) and at least one (3'') of the uncouplable swivel joints (3'', 4') is in the form of a step bearing (10, 11) in which spherical thrust bearing surfaces (17, 16; Fig. 10) extend concentrically around the bearing part (10) forming the pivot pin (12) and around the bearing part (11, 14) receiving the pivot pin (12), engage one in another ring fashion and receive the bearing forces directed axially of the pivot pin (12).
