[origin: EP0207502A2] In this process, using preheated hydrogen-containing hydrogenation gas under elevated pressure and elevated temperature, if appropriate with addition of an additive, in a liquid-phase system, the heavy oil is fed to a preheater and then subjected to a hydrogenation reaction in a reactor cascade. The reaction products are passed to a hot separator. Only a part of the total quantity of hydrogenation gas required in the liquid phase is admixed with the mixture of heavy oil and additives, which has been raised to the process pressure but not yet preheated. To simplify the process and to save energy, the other part of the quantity of hydrogenation gas is heated up by heat exchange with the gaseous top product from the hot separator in a first heat exchanger designed as a gas heat exchanger and added to the preheated mixture of heavy oil and additives and hydrogenation gas. <IMAGE>
