Abstract (en)
Drilling apparatus comprises a drill collar (10), a drill bit (12), two spaced stabilisers (16, 18), which act to locate the drill collar (10) within a bore hole (14) being drilled, and a control stabiliser (20) for applying a controlled lateral force or displacement to the drill collar in order to deflect the latter between the spaced stabilisers. Sensing means sense the actual drilling course and the latter is compared with a predetermined required drilling course stored in information storage means, the resulting error signal being used to govern operation of the control stabiliser (20).
