A biodegradable functional fluid of low flammability consists of or contains at least one brominated alkylbenzene derivative of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R<2> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R<3> is a hydrogen atom or a group of the general formula <IMAGE> in which n is an integer having a value from 1 to 4, m is an integer having a value of 1 or 2, y is an integer having a value of 0, 1 or 2 and x is an integer having a value from 1 to 3, with the proviso that the sum x + y has a value from 1 to 3.

Schwerentflammbare, biologisch abbaubare funktionelle Flüssigkeit, bestehend aus oder enthalten mindestens ein bromiertes Alkylbenzolderivat der allgemeinen Formel I <IMAGE> in der R¹ ein Wasserstoffatom oder eine Alkylgruppe mit 1 bis 3 Kohlenstoffatomen, R² ein Wasserstoffatom oder eine Alkylgruppe mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen, R³ ein Wasserstoffatom oder eine Gruppe der allgemeinen Formel <IMAGE> in der n eine ganze Zahl mit einem Wert von 1 bis 4, m eine ganze Zahl mit einem Wert von 1 oder 2 und y eine ganze Zahl mit einem Wert von 0, 1 oder 2 darstellen und x eine ganze Zahl mit einem Wert von 1 bis 3 mit der Maßgabe bedeuten, daß die Summe x + y einen Wert von 1 bis 3 aufweist.
