A one-cylinder, two-stroke internal combustion engine with crankcase scavenging, comprising a crankcase which encloses the crank drive including the counterweight with a minimum of clearance and which carries the cylinder, and further comprising a piston guided in said cylinder, which is connected by a connecting rod to a crankshaft supported on bearings in said crankcase and which controls scavenge ports arranged in the wall of said cylinder, said crankshaft being of the side-crank type, i.e. with bearings only on one side, and the only counterweight being positioned between the crankpin bearing of the connecting rod and the main crankshaft bearing on the side of the connecting rod, wherein the piston body (24') is provided with recesses (31) on the side of the counterweight into which said counterweight will enter with a minimum of play in its position near the bottom dead center, and wherein the area (33') of the cylinder liner (33) cooperating with said recesses in the piston body (24') has no scavenge ports (36, 37).
