[origin: EP0215314A2] The dry coke-quenching plant has a pre-chamber (1) with the coke charge (3) and a quenching chamber (2) located underneath the pre- chamber (1). In the lower region of the quenching chamber there is a coke discharge (21) and an inert gas feed (28). The pre-chamber (1) has an inert gas outlet (16). Pipes bearing a cooling water flow are arranged in the region of the coke bed and in the path of the inert gas stream. In order to minimise the amount of inert gas required for cooling and especially to transfer the heat more extensively to the cooling pipes bearing a cooling water flow, a cylindrical shell (6) formed from tubes (9) is arranged in the pre-chamber (1). The cylindrical shell (6) bounds the coke bed and, with the wall (14) of the pre- chamber (1), forms an annular space (15) as the path for the inert gas. <IMAGE>
