[origin: WO8600134A1] In an optical fiber transmission, a laser diode (1), acting as transmittor in one of the stations of the system, is biased slightly below threshold value, just after the sending of a light pulse in an optical fiber (2). The pulse, which is backscattered by a fault or break in the optical fiber section, is re-injected in the laser diode (1), which amplifies this pulse, after being biased below the threshold, up to about 20dB and is then detected by a detecting means (3), such a monitoring photodiode, positioned in the front of the rear facet of the laser. The signal detected by said detecting means (3) is sent through a line (4) to a control means, such an oscilloscope or other processing unity, provided with a grafic recorder, by means of which the position and the nature of the fault or break of the optical fiber can be detected.

Dans une ligne de transmission à fibres optiques, une diode laser (1), servant d'émetteur dans l'une des stations du système, est polarisée légèrement au-dessous de la valeur seuil, juste après l'envoi d'une impulsion luminneuse dans une fibre optique (2). L'impulsion, qui est rétrodiffusée par un défaut ou une interruption dans le segment de fibre optique, est réinjectée dans la diode laser (1), qui l'amplifie, après avoir été polarisée au-dessous du seuil, jusqu'à environ 20dB, et est ensuite détectée par un organe détecteur (3), tel qu'une photodiode de contrôle, positionnée devant la face arrière du laser. Le signal détecté par l'organe détecteur (3) est envoyé par l'intermédiaire d'une ligne (4) à un organe de commande, tel qu'un oscilloscope ou une autre unité de traitement, pourvue d'un enregistreur graphique, permettant de déterminer la position et la nature du défaut ou de l'interruption dans la fibre optique.
