[origin: WO8606090A1] A process for reducing the sulfur oxide content of a sulfur oxide-containing gas which includes contacting said gas with a material at conditions to associate at least a portion of said sulfur oxide contained in said gas with said material, comprising utilizing as the material a spinel composition comprising an alkaline earth metal component, an aluminum component and at least one of certain additional metal component in an amount effective to promote the oxidation of SO2 to SO3 at SO2 oxidation conditions and/or to promote the reduction of SO3 at SO3 reduction conditions. Improved spinel compositions are also disclosed.

Dans un procédé de réduction de la teneur en oxyde de soufre d'un gaz contenant l'oxyde de soufre, consistant à mettre en contact ledit gaz avec un matériau dans des conditions permettant d'associer au moins une partie dudit oxyde de soufre contenu dans ledit gaz avec ledit matériau, on utilise comme matériau une composition de spinelle comprenant un constituant métallique de terre alcaline, un constituant aluminium et au moins un parmi certains constituants métalliques additionnels dans une quantité suffisante pour activer l'oxydation de SO2 en SO3 aux conditions d'oxydation du SO2 et/ou pour activer la réduction du SO3 aux conditions de réduction du SO3. Des compositions de spinelle améliorées sont également décrites.
