An apparatus for quenching material for annealing heated in a furnace, the apparatus having a quenching bath container (13) receiving a quenching medium and formed at the top with an aperture for the introduction of the material for annealing ; a tank (9) which is connected to the quenching bath container (13) via a pipe (14) ; and a pumping device (18, 19, 20) for pumping the quenching medium out of the quenching container (13) into the tank (9), characterized in that the pumping device (18, 19, 20) can be changed over to pressure operation for the accelerated flooding of the quenching bath container (13).
