Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0222282A2] Corrosion resistance and paint adhesion of a metal surface are improved by forming on the surface an aqueous film of an aqueous acidic composition comprising chromium ions of which at least a portion are hexavalent, zinc ions and fluoride ions, drying this film on to the surface to form a chromium-containing coating and then applying paint directly on to the dried coating, without the necessity of first rinsing the resultant chemical conversion coating with a chromium-containing rinse solution or other rinse solution. A preferred aqueous acidic composition comprises 0.5g/l to saturation of chromium, at least 50% of the chromium being present as Cr<VI>, 0.1-10g/l of zinc, and 0.1-10g/l of fluoride, the composition having a pH of 2-4.5.
