[origin: US4753165A] A short inking unit for an offset rotary printing machine utilizes a heated ink transport cylinder having a particular surface with varying degrees of hydrophilicity, and an array of air blowing nozzles which cooperate to reduce or virtually eliminate contamination of the offset printing ink supply source with dampening fluid. Printing quality is improved since ink viscosity does not change and dampening fluid useage is kept at a minimum.
