Abstract (en)
[origin: WO8607469A1] A pressure-tight layer (10) for protecting an optical fiber unit used as a communication medium for a submarine optical cable is formed of divisional metal members (10a, 10b, 10c) having a sector cross section and applied to the optical fiber unit so as to enclose the same along its longitudinal direction. The inner circumferential surfaces (11a, 11b, 11c) and joint surfaces (12a, 12b, 12c) of the divisional metal members (10a, 10b, 10c) are matte-finished. Accordingly, the inter-layer bond strength of the pressure-tight layer (10) thus formed and optical fiber unit (1), and the mutual bond strength of the divisional metal members (10a, 10b, 10c) are improved, whereby the optical fiber unit can be satisfactorily protected, and also, the occurence of water-intrusion in the cable can be minimized even when it is damaged.
