A process for dehalogenating halogenated aliphatic or aromatic compounds by treatment with metallic sodium in an inert solvent and in the presence of a proton donor, which process comprises reacting the halogenated compounds with 2 to 4 equivalents of sodium per equivalent of bound halogen in the inert solvent in the presence of 0.5 to 2 moles of a branched or unbranched C1 -C5 alcohol or water per equivalent of bound halogen at a temperature from 100 to 150 degrees C.
