A bucket wheel cutting system for bucket wheel excavators, wherein the bucket wheel is fitted with cutting paddles and the suction pipe is connected to a suction chamber accommodated within the cutting system, which suction chamber is furnished with a suction opening itted in the suction area ; distinguished by the cutting wheel being composed of two coaxial, adjacent cutting wheels (1a, 1b) which are rigidly joined together and driven by a joint hydraulic motor (2), and by the suction chamber being divided by a central partition wall (6) into two separate suction chambers (5a, 5b) one of which lies within the area of one cutting wheel while the other lies within the area of the other cutting wheel, and by each of these suction chambers (5a, 5b) being connected with the suction pipe (4) via an opening furnished with a flap valve (7) in such a way that either one suction chamber or the other suction chamber (5a, 5b) is connected to the suction pipe at any one time.
