[origin: EP0228547A2] According to the invention, it is proposed to connect a rotary- angle transmitter (13) to the internal combustion engine (1), a certain number of pulses being transmitted per rotated angle unit. These pulses are counted in a counter (22) inside a gate, a signal for the top dead centre position of a piston being used as gate control pulses and an ignition pulse signal being used as trigger signals. The summed pulse signals thus correspond to the respective ignition angle and are displayed in a digital display (23). In a further development of the invention, it is proposed to drive the engine by means of an external drive (20) so that the ignition angle can be calibrated on the cold engine. <IMAGE>
