[origin: EP0229752A2] A rotary-drum wood chipper for cutting wood into chips has a rotor (2) with a plurality of chipping knives axially and tangentially offset relative to one another and interacting with a common counterknife or anvil strip. Arranged underneath the rotor (2) is an exchangeable sieve basket (9), the orifices (10) of which determine the size of the chips produced by the chipping knives. Chips which are so large that they cannot pass through the orifices of the sieve basket (9) are taken up by the rotor (2) and fed again to the counterknife or anvil strip until the chips can pass through the sieve basket. The chips passing through the orifices (10) fall onto an inclined gutter (13) in the form of an obliquely mounted trough. From there, the chips slip into the housing of a blower (14), this being assisted by the air flow caused by the rotating arms of the rotor. Arranged on the axle (5) of the rotor (2) are the impeller arms (15) of the blower (14) which at the same time form flywheel arms for overcoming peak loads and throw out the chips fed to the blower (14) (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
