Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0230667A2] So that ground layers can be efficiently removed or layers or concrete slabs forming a seal at the level of these ground layers can be efficiently constructed or sealing sheeting can be laid, excavations running parallel to or at an angle to one another are dug at least down to the bottom of the layer on opposite sides of a site above the layer to be removed. To dig a strip from the layer, an elongated shield, starting from one excavation, is advanced to the opposite excavation in the transverse direction, which shield has excavating implements at the face. On the side of the shield which has adjacent to it the next strip to be removed, a gallery constructed in the protection of the shield tail formed by the trailing shield is carried along. The extracted material is conveyed away through the gallery and packing material is supplied, or a sealing layer or a concrete slab is constructed in the protection of the shield tail or a sealing web of sheeting is laid. The removed material is used as filling material. After the opposite excavation is reached, the shield is turned through 180 DEG and the next strip of the layer is removed in a corresponding manner, the gallery crossed laterally by the shield being removed in the protection of the shield tail and placed again only during removal of the next layer strip in the opposite direction.
