A process for regenerating a diesel soot filter disposed in the exhaust duct of a diesel engine, the exhaust gas being compressed in that section of the exhaust duct which contains the diesel soot filter (10), by controlled throttling of the exhaust duct, the compression being effected to a degree such that the regeneration temperature limit is reached or exceeded, characterised in that the throttling is effected upstream of the diesel soot filter (10) and in that the amount of fuel allocated to the diesel engine is reduced during the throttling.
