[origin: EP0231846A2] Parallel bars, in which two cable devices (5) are provided laterally, a balancing device (10) being provided between one end of one of the cable devices (5) and the floor (3). It is desirable for the number of devices to be actuated for a change in the bar spacing to be reduced considerably. This is achieved in that the balancing device is a tensile spring device (10) with a compression spring element (12) having a progressive spring characteristic. The progressive spring characteristic normally given in a compression spring element does not prove to be a hindrance since the gymnasts generally require an increasing bracing force as the bar spacing increases. <IMAGE>
