[origin: EP0238990A2] In a drive unit for a cloth beam of a weaving or knitting machine, a friction clutch serves to transmit a torque from a drive motor to the drive shaft of the cloth beam. A cam disc, which has a recess in its outer edge, acts on a follower. It in turn acts on the friction clutch via an adjusting nut and a spring. If the cam disc is coupled to the drive motor, every rotation of the cam disc will cause the follower to adjust the torque transmittable by the friction clutch. This makes it possible to take into account the change in the roll diameter of the cloth beam and hence to keep the force acting on the cloth beam constant. <IMAGE>
