[origin: WO8605226A1] A composite building unit (10A, 21) having the configuration and overall dimensions of a standard brick comprises an outer enclosure (10A, 19) of brick clay filled with a core (21) of thermally insulating cementitious material which is bonded to the fired clay. When laid with other, similar units in the construction of a wall the unit provides improved thermal insulation values across the wall, permitting labour and cost savings especially when a "fair-facing" for the interior surface of a cavity wall is required. In alternative embodiments of the invention the core (21) may be made up of layers or plies parallel with a face of the unit to be exposed and alternately of high-density, load bearing cementitious materail and of aerated or reticulated cementitious material. Alternatively, or in addition, thermal barrier means may span the interior of the enclosure (10A) within the cementitious core (21). In other embodiments of the invention the enclosure (10A) need not extend under the unit and may enclose only one end or one side of the unit. Instead of a ceramic material the enclosure (10A) may be of a vitreous material or natural or synthetic stone.
