Method for packaging a palletized load (1, 2) in a cover (3) of heat-shrinkable plastic material, comprising a first phase in which the palletized load (1, 2) is placed on a support table (4) ; a second phase in which the open cover (3) is fitted in position around and over the palletized load (1, 2) ; and a third phase in which the cover (3) thus placed over the palletized load (1, 2) is heated for the purpose of effecting its heat-shrinkage, in which method the air contained in the cover (3) is exhausted at least during a part of the third (heating) phase, characterized in that, before the air is exhausted, air exhaustion means (20) are placed between the palletized load (1, 2) and the cover (3), particularly in a lateral clearance (19), and said air exhaustion means (20) are removed after the exhaustion of the air, in such a manner as to exhaust mainly the air contained in the lateral clearance.
