[origin: EP0252332A2] Briquettes of good loading strength, weathering resistance and fire resistance are produced from non-caking fine-grained fuels such as anthracite or lean coal, fine coke, hard lignite or charcoal, by spraying the fine-grained fuel, heated to more than 70 DEG C, with a hot aqueous solution of a fully saponified polyvinyl alcohol, homogenising the mixture of fuel and binder solution and briquetting it with efficient fume removal. According to the invention, 0.3 to 4% of starch is here added to the mixture before the homogenisation. The briquettes produced according to the invention burn without evolving smoke and soot, and their combustion off-gases are free of pollutants, so that the briquettes meet the demands of protecting the environment.
