[origin: WO8704651A1] A device for retaining and handling a flat object (W), which can be a workpiece to be machined or a machining tool, clamps the object between a fixed clamping jaw (1.1) and a mobile clamping jaw (1.3). The device has a closed, rectangular, flat frame (1), one side of of which forms the fixed clamping jaw (1.1). A mobile clamping jaw (1.3) can be fitted from the outside in the frame (1) and is movable therein. It is provided with means (1.3.5, 1.3.6 and 1.3.7) for clamping it to the frame (1) and can be braced against the flat object (W). At least one bracing means (1.5) acting upon the mobile clamping jaw (1.3) is arranged on the side (1.4) of the frame (1) facing the fixed clamping jaw (1.1). The device allows the flat object to be tightened without any play or backlash. It is particularly appropriate for precision machining carried out in one or several successive operations, during which a predetermined machining position of the object is maintained.
