1. Four-stroke internal combustion engine which comprises either three inlet valves or three outlet valves or three inlet and three outlet valves per cylinder, with a first cam shaft for the inlet valves and a second cam shaft for the outlet valves, the tams of said cam shafts acting upon the valves via cup-shaped tappets, characterized in that at least the longitudinal middle axis (19) of the tappet (8b) cooperating with the intermediate valve (4) of the three inlet and/or outlet valves (3, 4, 5) penetrates the plane (22) placed through the axis of rotation (21) of the respective cam shaft (14) at right angle to said longitudinal middle axis (19) at a distance (a) from the axis of rotation (21) of the cam shaft (14).

Bei einer Brennkraftmaschine mit drei Einlaßventilen und zwei Auslaßventilen pro Zylinder ist für die Einlaßventile und für die Auslaßventile jeweils eine Nockenwelle vorgesehen, deren Nocken über Tassenstößel auf die Ventile wirken. Um eine ausreichende Wandstärke zwischen benachbarten Bohrungen 9 für die Tassenstößel 8a, 8b und 8c der Einlaßventile zu erhalten, sind letztere so angeordnet, daß ihre Längsmittelachsen 18, 19 und 20 die Drehachse 21 der Nockenwelle 14 nicht schneiden, sondern seitlich versetzt zu dieser verlaufen.
